Head Coach
Ryan Medcalf is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with over 14 years of experience, bringing a wealth of competition and coaching expertise to Osmosis BJJ. He began training in England at just 10 years old. Over the years, Ryan has been a strong competitor at every belt level and trained with world-class athletes, such as André Galvão and Rafael Mendes. Ryan’s coaching style is focused on making Jiu-Jitsu accessible to all - breaking down complex techniques into easy-to-learn, practical applications for beginners, while providing high-level insights for advanced students. His experience being a qualified personal trainer and coaching both kids and adults has helped him develop a structured, engaging, and effective coaching approach. As a competitor, Ryan has won multiple regional and national titles in both the UK and New Zealand.
Coach
As head coach at Osmosis BJJ, he focuses on building a high-quality training environment where students of all levels can develop their confidence, skills, and love for the sport.Alberto is a brown belt with seven years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, spending this time being an integral member of the team at Bucklands Beach BJJ. He has competed, coached, and trained under Andy Medcalf, developing a well-rounded skill set and a strong ability to teach BJJ effectively. Alberto has dedicated many years to fostering a fun and safe learning environment for the Little Warriors program at Bucklands Beach BJJ. Coaching kids from ages 4 through 16, he adapts to different attention spans while making Jiu-Jitsu both engaging and rewarding. Beyond the mats, Alberto is an avid outdoorsman who loves hunting, especially with his kids, who also train in Jiu-Jitsu. He enjoys sharing his passion for the wilderness and self-sufficiency, instilling valuable life lessons both on and off the mats.
Assistant Coach
Max Pascoe is an up-and-coming student at Osmosis BJJ, known for his dedication, positive attitude, and passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A consistent presence on the mats, Max is not only focused on his own growth as a competitor, but also deeply committed to helping others along their journey. Max plays a key role in supporting our Little Warriors classes, where his patience, encouragement, and ability to lead by example make him a favourite among the kids. His natural ability to connect with younger students and create a safe, fun environment has made him an excellent addition to the team. Outside of the gym, Max enjoys playing rugby and brings the same discipline, teamwork, and determination from the field into every training session at Osmosis. Max is a valued member of our team and a shining example of the kind of culture we’re building.
